On commence l’année en musique* 🎶 et on reste bien dans le thème du moment : le Nouvel An. 🕛🎆

* La musique étant un des outils efficaces à avoir dans votre liste pour progresser en anglais, on en reparle.

Aviez-vous remarqué qu’il existe des tonnes de chansons de Noël en anglais mais très peu de chansons consacrées au Nouvel An ? 🤔

L’une des plus connues est Happy New Year du célébrissime groupe suédois ABBA. Elle passe vraiment toutes les années, certainement parce qu’elle est assez atemporelle, et ce encore plus dans les pays anglophones !

On commence par une introduction en anglais of course, histoire de donner un peu de contexte (et par la même occasion du bon vocabulaire). Les mots anglais à apprendre sont en gras et en marrons. Ensuite je vous mets les paroles de la chanson, avec le lien vers une vidéo pour écouter en même temps. Et on finira bien sûr avec le vocabulaire courant anglais de la chanson en question.

Le tout vous permettra d’apprendre 57 nouveaux mots en anglais ! Enfin moins car je pense que vous en connaissez déjà et puis pour certains reconnaîtront un bon paquet de mots anglais que nous avions déjà vu il y a un peu plus de deux ans (déjà 😮) !

Pour finaliser l’apprentissage du vocabulaire d’aujourd’hui, je vous propose ensuite de faire un petit jeu ! 🎲

Avant de commencer, voici quelques infos à savoir avant de continuer. Elles vous seront utiles pour une meilleure compréhension du vocabulaire anglais que je vous donne par la suite.
Ceux qui ont l’habitude de me lire connaissent déjà tout cela et peuvent passer directement à la suite. ⏩ 😉

Abréviations

Voici les abréviations utilisées dans l’article, vous les avez peut-être déjà rencontrées notamment dans des dictionnaires :
sth : something ⇔ qch : quelque chose
sb : someone/somebody ⇔ qqn : quelqu’un

Signes de ponctuation

Quand je donne des termes et qu’il y a une parenthèse, cela signifie que ce qui est entre parenthèses est facultatif. Ex. : (marriage) proposal 💍 ⇒ vous entendrez soit proposal tout court, soit marriage proposal.

Learning English with songs 🎶

I always say that you should learn English in an entertaining¹ way. So if you like video games, then play them in English, if you’re fond of² movies or series, then watch them in English… And one great way to have fun learning this beautiful language is through³ music. 🎼 You’ll also find it easier to remember⁴.

And some say repetition is one of the best ways to learn, well you cannot really watch a series over and over again⁵ (okay you can do it, but you’ll probably end up⁶ being fed up with⁷ it at some point) and it’s tricky⁸ to remember it because they equal to a big amount⁹ of time. Whereas a song it’s short and also quite¹⁰ repetitive, perfect!

My experience: starting to learn English thanks to music

As far as I’m concerned¹¹, I have learned a lot of English thanks to¹² one of the most famous and successful pop groups of all time: the one and the only, ABBA! I would spend my days listening¹³ to their genius songs (on LPs¹⁴ back then¹⁵).

Ici “would” est utilisé pour exprimer une habitude passée (to refer to a repeated action in past). On le traduirait en français par un verbe conjugué à l’imparfait.

¹⁴ LPs: LP (plural LPs) stands for long-playing (record) so it’s a vinyl, a phonograph record, one that turns 33 times a minute

I’m sure you know ABBA or at least some of their songs. It’s a Swedish band¹⁶ formed by four members, two women (Agnetha, the blond one, and Anni-Frid or Frida, the brunette) and two men (Benny and Björn). The name is derived from¹⁷ their initials:

To make it short, they became world famous by winning The Eurovision Song Contest with the song Waterloo on April 6, 1974. In the nineties, Benny and Björn composed the famous musical²¹ Mamma Mia! which is entirely based on the songs of ABBA.

The smash hit²² musical has been and still is played in more than 50 countries in all 6 continents, and it has been translated into²³ 22 languages! A film adaptation was released²⁴ in July 2008. The feel-good²⁵ hit movie starring²⁶ some of the biggest names of the film industry (Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters…) was one of the box office smashes of that year. And an amazing sequel²⁷ has been released this summer.

Make use of your passion to learn English!

Okay, I’m a huge fan and could spend hours telling you stories about ABBA, explaining their history but that’s not what this blog is about. By the way, I’ve also learned a lot of English while reading books about them when I was a kid and a teenager. So really, if you’re passionate about something, find books, videos, and other stuff²⁸ like interviews you can read on the web… in English. Trust me, it’s THE best way to learn!

Let’s start learning English with the song Happy New Year which was recorded³⁰ and released in 1980. It was written and composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, as usual³¹, with the lead vocal sung by Agnetha Fältskog.
Fun fact: Its working title³² was Daddy Don’t Get Drunk on Christmas Day. 🤣

It was one of the first songs Benny and Björn wrote for their 7th album Super Trouper.

At the beginning, they actually³³ intended to³⁴ use it in a musical taking place on a New Year’s Eve! 😮 Benny once said: “We thought it would be a good framework³⁵, a few people in a room, looking back on³⁶ what has been, thinking about the future, that sort of thing”.
